The Poetry Workshop is using hypertext to explore the process of writing poems and working on them in poetry workshops; and then to present this process, along with new poems, to others outside the group. We hope this will encourage your own reading, writing and constructive discussion of poetry. In our workshops we follow a set procedure: one poet reads a poem aloud, then keeps quiet while the others discuss it. At the end of the discussion, the poet may choose to answer (or ask) questions or comment on the workshop. Usually the poem has been sent out in advance. This process (our critical practice) is discussed more fully under the heading Rules of Workshops in the CRITICAL PRACTICE topic, and in the poets' Home Pages and their own comments on their workshops. The workshops presented here are live face-to-face workhops which were transcribed from recordings and incorporated in a hypertext. The hypertext inter-links the workshops, the texts of the poems, background discussions of general points arising in the workshop discussions, the poets' comments on their own workshops, poets' Home Pages and other poems by the poets.

The animated hypertextPoetryWorkshopproject  logo was designed and created by Annette Cooper, multimedia and Web designer, who also created the original graphics (except as otherwise noted) and established the colour scheme for the site. The site map and other elements of the user interface were conceived by Leona Carpenter in consultation with the Poetry Workshop group (who chose icons to represent themselves) and realised by Annette Cooper and Leona Carpenter. Icon creator credits:  Kim – photograph by Kathleen Morrissey; Chris – artwork by himself; Sudeep – photograph by Rodney Prynne; Hugh – artwork by Leona Carpenter; David – artwork by Christopher Hedley-Dent; Leona – artwork by Peter Robinson; Elizabeth – artwork by Irene Gunston; Jane – artwork by Sarah McMenemy.
